Abstral (Fentanyl)

Abstral is a medicine used to treat breakthrough pain in adults with cancer who are already routinely taking other opioid pain medicines around-the-clock for their constant cancer pain. Abstral is started only after you have been taking another opioid pain medicine and your body is used to it (opioid-tolerant). Abstral is a federally controlled substance because it has abuse potential.

Do not use Abstral if you are not opioid-tolerant. Abstral can cause life-threatening breathing problems if you are not opioid-tolerant, if you do not use Abstral exactly as prescribed by your doctor, or if a child takes Abstral by accident. Keep Abstral in a safe place away from children. Accidental use by a child is a medical emergency. Get emergency help immediately. Abstral is available only through a restricted distribution program called the TIRF REMS Access Program. Call your doctor or get emergency medical help immediately if you have breathing problems, drowsiness, faintness, dizziness, confusion, or any other unusual symptoms after taking Abstral. These can be signs of an overdose. Your dose of Abstral may be too high for you. These symptoms may lead to serious problems if not treated right away. Do not take another dose of Abstral. If you stop taking your around-the-clock pain medicine for your constant cancer pain, you must stop using Abstral. You may no longer be opioid-tolerant. Talk to your doctor about how to treat your pain.
